Carlos Augusto’s strong start to the season has encouraged Inter Milan to accelerate efforts to extend his contract, although the Brazilian defender’s long-term future at San Siro is not yet settled.
The 27-year-old is contracted to Inter until June 2028, and the club want to improve his salary and secure a longer agreement. Inter’s priority is to retain him, but the player must be convinced that he can obtain enough regular playing time despite competing with Alessandro Bastoni and Federico Dimarco for roles on the left side.
Carlos Augusto’s versatility has made him particularly valuable to Cristian Chivu. He can operate as a left wing-back or as the left-sided defender in a back three, providing reliable cover while also offering attacking quality. His performances have strengthened his position within the squad, even though he does not currently rank ahead of Inter’s established starters.
He also made a significant impact in Inter’s Champions League opener at Real Madrid. With Inter trailing 2-0, Carlos Augusto scored in the 77th minute after receiving a cutback from Lautaro Martínez, but Real Madrid held on for a 2-1 victory.
The goal followed another important contribution against Napoli, when Carlos Augusto supplied the cross for Federico Dimarco’s equaliser in Inter’s 3-2 comeback win. His recent displays have reinforced the club’s belief that he is an essential squad player, particularly during a demanding schedule.
Reports linking him with Roma and Atlético Madrid should therefore be treated as interest rather than evidence of an imminent transfer. Roma may admire his profile, and other European clubs could monitor the situation, but Inter’s immediate position is to negotiate a renewal rather than prepare for his departure. There is also no reliable confirmation of a proposed swap involving Roma’s Manu Koné or Gianluca Mancini.
Carlos Augusto has indicated that contract discussions remain ongoing, but his immediate focus is on helping Inter compete for trophies. The next stage of negotiations will depend on whether the club can offer improved terms and whether the defender believes his long-term role in Milan will be substantial enough to justify staying.
