Manchester United are monitoring Bruno Fernandes after the captain appeared to leave Old Trafford with discomfort following Thursday’s 4-0 Champions League victory over Sabah FK. However, there is no confirmed diagnosis, and reports of an ice pack or a specific ankle injury have not been verified.
Fernandes completed the match and scored United’s second goal in a commanding European return. Footage showing him walking awkwardly after the final whistle prompted concern ahead of Sunday’s Manchester derby, but the images alone do not establish the nature or seriousness of any problem.
Luke Shaw was also absent from the Sabah match after being given an additional recovery day. Michael Carrick said Shaw’s rest was precautionary and not the result of a new injury, adding that the left-back should be assessed before the derby.
Matthijs de Ligt remains on the longer-term injury list as he continues his recovery from a serious back problem. Carrick said the Netherlands defender is progressing well in training, but United are managing the final stage of his rehabilitation carefully.
The club’s other fitness concerns include Amad Diallo and Carlos Baleba, who are recovering from ankle injuries, while Joshua Zirkzee and other squad members continue to be assessed. Reports that Bryan Mbeumo and Noussair Mazraoui had only just returned from international duty are inaccurate; both were available for United’s Champions League squad.
United’s 4-0 win over Sabah featured goals from Matheus Cunha, Fernandes, Benjamin Šeško and Lisandro Martínez. The result provided Michael Carrick’s team with a positive start to their Champions League campaign, but Fernandes’ condition will remain the principal fitness issue before City’s visit to Old Trafford.
