Brentford striker Kaye Furo will miss Tuesday night’s Carabao Cup third-round tie at Reading after requiring surgery for an injury sustained in training. Head coach Keith Andrews said the 19-year-old had been due to start, but the club have not set a timetable for his return.
Furo picked up the injury in the days before Brentford’s trip to the Select Car Leasing Stadium and underwent an operation on Monday morning. Andrews did not disclose the nature of the injury, explaining only that a scan and specialist consultation led the club to conclude surgery was the appropriate course of action.
“Unfortunately for him, he’s had to have an operation this morning,” Andrews said. “The timing of an injury is obviously never good for a player, but I felt he was just coming into a really good place with his game. That’s really frustrating for him.”
The setback is particularly disappointing because Furo had earned a planned first-team opportunity. Andrews confirmed he intended to start the teenager against Reading, describing him as a player who had reached “that type of space” through his recent form and development.
Furo joined Brentford from Club Brugge in the summer and has made a strong start for the club’s B team. The Belgian youth international scored four goals in his first two Premier League 2 matches and won the competition’s Player of the Month award for August. He is a mobile, physically imposing centre-forward, but is still awaiting his senior competitive debut for the Bees.
Brentford travel to League One side Reading at 8 p.m. BST on Tuesday, with the match available on Sky Sports+. The Bees are unbeaten in four Premier League games after Saturday’s 2–2 draw at Bournemouth and are aiming to reach the Carabao Cup fourth round for a third consecutive season.
Andrews is expected to rotate his side, with Callum Wilson a likely replacement at centre-forward. Dango Ouattara, Fábio Carvalho and Rico Henry are also in contention to start, while Benjamin Fredrick is expected to be involved after returning to full training.
Furo’s absence adds to Brentford’s broader injury concerns. Club captain Nathan Collins is expected to remain out until after the international break because of the calf injury he suffered against Sunderland, while Mathias Jensen is also unlikely to return in time for the Reading tie.
The immediate priority is Furo’s recovery rather than a rapid return. Andrews said the club will support the striker and bring him back “as safely and securely as possible,” with a clearer timescale likely only after he progresses through the initial stages of rehabilitation.
