Ballon d’Or 2026: Mbappé’s Real Madrid and France face the ultimate test

Kylian Mbappé’s 2025–26 campaign delivered an exceptional combination of scoring achievements. The Real Madrid forward finished as La Liga’s top scorer with 25 goals and led the Champions League scoring charts with 15. Across all club competitions, he scored 42 times in 44 appearances. Yet for all his individual brilliance, the absence of major silverware for club or country presents a challenge to his Ballon d’Or ambitions.

The World Cup added another compelling dimension to Mbappé’s case. His 10 goals at the 2026 tournament in Canada, Mexico and the United States earned him a second consecutive Golden Boot and lifted his career World Cup tally to 22. Those goals came across three tournaments: four in 2018, eight in 2022 and 10 in 2026. His scoring achievements, however, did not deliver another title for France, who finished fourth after losing the third-place match 6–4 to England.

Real Madrid’s season presented a similar contrast. Mbappé collected individual scoring honours, but the club finished without a major trophy. His candidacy therefore rests heavily on his consistency and decisive attacking contributions rather than the collective achievements that strengthen the cases of some rival contenders.

The central question is how the jury will balance those accomplishments. The 2026 Ballon d’Or recognises performances during the 2025–26 season, rather than a calendar year, so Mbappé’s performances in the new 2026–27 campaign will not form a decisive chapter in this award. His case has already been established through his scoring for Madrid and his record-breaking World Cup.

Mbappé has also been direct about his ambitions. “Of course, I think this year could be a good year for me to win the Ballon d’Or,” he said, while acknowledging that journalists would decide who deserved the award. His public confidence has made his pursuit of a first Ballon d’Or a prominent part of the build-up to Monday’s ceremony in London.

For Mbappé, the award represents a test of how voters weigh individual excellence against team success. His domestic, European and international scoring achievements give him a substantial case, but they do not make the outcome certain. The jury must decide whether his remarkable production outweighs the stronger collective honours available elsewhere in the field.
