Atlético Madrid moved into third place in La Liga with a 4–0 win over Osasuna, but the match was played on Wednesday, September 16, at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano, not at Estadio de la Cartuja or on Saturday. The result gives Diego Simeone’s team momentum before Sunday’s Madrid derby against Real Madrid.

Jonathan David opened the scoring in the 24th minute. Lee Kang-in doubled Atlético’s lead in the 54th, Robin Le Normand made it 3–0 in the 63rd, and Álex Baena completed the victory in the 82nd minute. There was no Osasuna consolation goal; all four goals were scored by Atlético.

The performance strengthened Atlético’s early title credentials because it combined control with efficient finishing. David provided the central threat, Lee added width and creativity, while Le Normand and Baena completed a result that left Osasuna unable to respond. Atlético recorded the win without needing a late recovery or a narrow escape.

The Madrid derby now has added significance. Atlético’s victory lifted them to third, and their strong goal difference gives them confidence before facing Real Madrid, who have also made a strong start under José Mourinho.

Luis de la Fuente’s Spain contract extension is a separate national-team development. RFEF president Rafael Louzán announced that the World Cup-winning coach will remain in charge through 2032, covering Spain’s 2030 home World Cup. His previous agreement was due to expire in 2028.

Spain’s next Nations League match is scheduled against England at Wembley on September 26, so the renewal provides continuity ahead of the new international cycle.

The Levante–Athletic Club postponement is also unrelated to Atlético’s victory: that La Liga fixture was called off because torrential rain flooded the Ciutat de València pitch. Barcelona’s early-season scoring form is another separate storyline, not a factor in Atlético’s 4–0 win.
