The Gunners are actively exploring a move for Atlético Madrid forward Julián Álvarez, with club officials making informal enquiries to evaluate whether a deal is viable before deciding whether to formalise their interest. With significant financial backing and rival suitors hitting roadblocks, Arsenal have emerged in prime position to land the Argentine striker, though striking a deal will likely require a near world-record offer.
A central figure in Arsenal’s pursuit is sporting director Andrea Berta, who joined the north London side last March after spending 12 years at Atlético Madrid. Berta personally negotiated Álvarez’s €95 million ($82.4m) transfer from Manchester City to the Spanish capital in August 2024 and maintains a close relationship with the player’s agent, Fernando Hidalgo. Arsenal are long-term admirers of Álvarez and previously considered him alongside Benjamin Šeško—who ultimately joined Manchester United from Red Bull Leipzig—prior to signing Viktor Gyökeres from Sporting Lisbon last summer. Although Arsenal’s primary market focus has been securing a left-winger, decision-makers view the pool of elite attackers capable of elevating their squad as extremely small, providing the flexibility to pursue an attacker of Álvarez’s pedigree.
The potential move follows intense friction in Spain over the forward’s signature. Real Madrid saw a massive €150 million proposal rejected by Atlético Madrid earlier this week, a bid met with firm derision in the Spanish capital. Meanwhile, Barcelona made Álvarez their primary target of the transfer window, submitting offers reaching €100 million and placing a deadline of July 31 for Atlético to accept before moving to other options. Atlético president Enrique Cerezo has firmly declared that Álvarez will not be transferred, while the club publicly mocked Barcelona’s approach by linking the Catalan side to absurd counter-bids for Lamine Yamal, Pedri, and Raphinha. Barcelona’s ongoing financial difficulties mean they will not exceed the €100 million mark, leaving their pursuit severely compromised and ruling out alternatives such as Chelsea striker João Pedro.
Despite Arsenal holding the financial upper hand over Barcelona, convincing the player remains a pivotal hurdle. Álvarez spent two seasons with Manchester City before moving to LaLiga and has been adamant throughout the summer that his priority is a move to Barcelona. Arsenal have indicated to both Atlético and the player’s camp that they stand ready to strike if a move to Barcelona fails to materialise. However, the Premier League side will require clear encouragement from Álvarez’s camp that he is prepared to return to England before progressing negotiations further.
As the chase for Álvarez continues, Arsenal are also finalizing secondary squad movements, preparing to complete a deal for 18-year-old centre-back Elijah Upson after he turned down a contract offer from North London rivals Tottenham Hotspur.
