Chelsea and Liverpool Target £70m Inter Defender Alessandro Bastoni in Transfer Tug-of-War

Premier League heavyweights Chelsea and Liverpool have both entered the frame for Inter centre-back Alessandro Bastoni, with the elite defender valued at £70m. However, securing the Italian international’s signature is proving to be a complex endeavor that will demand far more than just financial firepower. For Serie A side Inter, parting ways with a defensive cornerstone presents a massive strategic risk, making it difficult to envision a scenario where a sale aligns with their current ambitions unless an extraordinary offer materializes.

At Stamford Bridge, the push for defensive reinforcements reflects an urgent need to overhaul a unit that has struggled for consistency. Under ownership group BlueCo, Chelsea have sought to add Premier League quality and elite experience, yet their backline options remain largely unsettled. Fit-again England international Levi Colwill stands out as a reliable long-term foundation, but surrounding options have flattered to deceive. Defenders such as Benoit Badiashile, Tosin Adarabioyo, Wesley Fofana, Axel Disasi, Mamadou Sarr, and Trevoh Chalobah have all endured inconsistent spells. Following Chalobah’s departure—which yielded £25m plus £5m in add-ons in pure profit for the home-grown talent—Chelsea are left needing a marquee addition capable of elevating the entire unit.

Liverpool are equally keen to bolster their ranks with elite defensive talent, setting up a compelling off-pitch duel with their London rivals. The dynamic between the two clubs is further complicated by interest in younger prospects across the continent. Chelsea’s own 20-year-old defensive talent Josh Acheampong has reportedly emerged on the radar of both Liverpool and Real Madrid. Despite not yet establishing himself as a regular starter at Stamford Bridge, Chelsea regard Acheampong as untouchable, rebuffing external interest while actively monitoring established options like Bastoni to solve their immediate first-team requirements.

The primary barrier for both English suitors remains Inter’s unwavering stance. At present, it is difficult to see how sanctioning a departure for Bastoni makes sense for the Italian heavyweights, even with a £70m valuation attached to his name. Successfully completing a transfer of this magnitude will require more than just meeting a price tag; it will take a comprehensive structural effort to persuade Inter to release one of the European game’s premier central defenders.
