Arsenal scrape late win as Caldentey converts stoppage‑time penalty against HB Køge

Arsenal opened their UEFA Women’s Champions League campaign with a narrow 1–0 victory over HB Køge at Meadow Park, with Mariona Caldentey converting a stoppage-time penalty to secure all three points.

The Gunners dominated possession and territory but struggled to break down a disciplined HB Køge defence. Arsenal appeared to have taken the lead when Chloe Kelly found the net in the first half, but the goal was ruled out after Stina Blackstenius was judged to have been offside and obstructing the goalkeeper’s view.

Arsenal eventually found a breakthrough in the third minute of added time. Substitute Selina Cerci was brought down inside the penalty area by Yukina Sakabe, and the referee pointed to the spot. Caldentey stepped up and sent a low finish past Alberte Vingum to give the hosts a dramatic victory.

Renée Slegers had made eight changes from the team that drew 1–1 with Manchester United at the weekend, with Caldentey and Cerci among the substitutes who helped change the game. The Arsenal manager praised the squad’s mentality and resilience after they continued to push for a decisive goal despite a frustrating performance in front of goal.

“We get the goal as a squad,” Slegers said. “It was a mentality and resilience win today.”

The result gives Arsenal an important winning start to the league phase, but their lack of attacking sharpness remains a concern. The Gunners created pressure without consistently producing clear chances and will need greater precision in future matches against stronger European opposition.
