Mainoo's Midfield Mastery: United Star Leads Premier League in Possession Won Amid Torrid Start

Kobbie Mainoo has established himself as the Premier League’s leading player for possession won this season, recovering the ball 40 times across the opening weeks of the campaign. According to data shared by Statman Dave, the Manchester United midfielder sits ahead of Newcastle United’s Lewis Hall and Bournemouth’s Alex Scott in the division’s standings.

The statistic provides a rare positive for Manchester United supporters during a disappointing start to the season under Michael Carrick. United have collected just five points from their opening five Premier League fixtures, their joint-lowest return at this stage of a Premier League campaign.

United’s latest league match ended in a 1-1 draw away to Fulham at Craven Cottage. Lisandro Martínez’s own goal gave Fulham the lead before Matheus Cunha’s deflected 89th-minute effort rescued a point for the visitors. The result left United 12th in the table and without a league win in four matches.

Mainoo’s work off the ball has stood out amid those wider struggles. His ability to read play, intercept passes and regain possession has offered United a valuable source of control in midfield, particularly when the team have struggled to sustain attacks or maintain defensive cohesion.

The contrast between Mainoo’s output and United’s collective difficulties was clear during the recent Manchester derby. Manchester City won 1-0 at Old Trafford despite playing for more than an hour with 10 men following Phil Foden’s first-half red card. Erling Haaland scored the decisive goal, although Pro Ref later admitted that VAR made an error in allowing the goal to stand after failing to identify an offside offence by Enzo Fernández.

Mainoo had opportunities in the derby, hitting the post as United came close to responding. His performance was another example of his importance in midfield, even as the team failed to turn promising moments into results.

United’s EFL Cup campaign has already ended following a 3-2 defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion at Old Trafford in the third round. Brighton went on to draw Manchester City in the fourth round after City defeated Norwich City 5-0.

As United seek to recover from their poor opening run, Mainoo’s capacity to win the ball and begin transitions remains one of the clearest positives available to Carrick. The 19-year-old’s 40 recoveries place him at the top of the Premier League’s possession-won rankings, highlighting his growing influence despite a difficult collective start to the season.
