Lamine Yamal has etched his name into FC Barcelona’s history books once again, becoming the youngest player to captain the club in a competitive match. At 19 years and 58 days old, the forward surpassed the previous record held by Bojan Krkic when he took over the armband during Barcelona’s 5-1 Champions League victory over Feyenoord.
The moment came in the 71st minute, when first-choice captain Raphinha was substituted and handed the armband to Yamal. The teenager’s elevation to captaincy underlined his growing status within the Barcelona squad and marked another landmark moment in his rapid rise.
Bojan had previously been Barcelona’s youngest captain after wearing the armband in a Copa del Rey match in 2010 at the age of 20. Yamal’s record is recognised as the youngest in the club’s modern history, although complete records from Barcelona’s earliest years do not entirely rule out the possibility that a younger player may have worn the armband.
Yamal marked the occasion with a goal in Barcelona’s commanding win over Feyenoord. Raphinha scored twice, while Karim Adeyemi and Gabriel Jesus also found the net as Barcelona began their Champions League campaign with an emphatic victory.
The milestone came amid another strong start to the season for Yamal. In Barcelona’s following La Liga match, he scored twice in a 4-2 victory away to Levante at the Ciutat de València. His first goal came from close range after Raphinha’s assist, before he converted a second-half penalty.
Yamal’s influence from the right flank has become increasingly important to Barcelona’s attack. His ability to combine close control, direct running and composure in front of goal has made him one of the team’s most decisive players despite his age.
As Barcelona pursue their objectives across La Liga and the Champions League, Yamal’s emergence represents both an immediate advantage and a major source of optimism for the future. Taking the captain’s armband at 19 was another indication of the trust he has earned within the squad—and another record added to an already extraordinary start to his career.
