Former Premier League Midfielder Joe Aribo Unattached Three Weeks After Transfer Window Closes

Joe Aribo remains a free agent three weeks after the summer window closed, having been released by Southampton when his contract expired at the end of June. The 30-year-old Nigeria international is still able to join a club outside the conventional transfer window because he is unattached.

Aribo’s final season under contract with Southampton was disrupted by limited involvement and a January loan move to Leicester City. He made only seven appearances for Southampton in the first half of the 2025–26 campaign, then played six times for Leicester as the Foxes were relegated to League One. Leicester did not make the transfer permanent, and Southampton subsequently confirmed his release.

The midfielder’s career path includes a strong spell at Charlton Athletic, where he helped the club win promotion from League One in 2018–19, before joining Rangers in 2019. At Ibrox, he became part of Rangers’ unbeaten Scottish Premiership-winning side in 2020–21 and scored in the 2022 Europa League final against Eintracht Frankfurt, a match Rangers ultimately lost on penalties.

At Southampton, Aribo made 111 appearances in all competitions after joining from Rangers in July 2022. His most productive and high-profile period came in Glasgow, where he accumulated 26 goals and 25 assists in 149 appearances, and he remains a 34-cap Nigeria international.

He has been linked with possible moves to Rangers, clubs in Turkey and League One side Wycombe Wanderers, but none had materialised by 21 September. For prospective clubs, Aribo offers versatility across central midfield and attacking roles, experience in the Premier League, Championship, Europa League and international football, and the advantage of requiring no transfer fee.
