Newcastle United produced a commanding response to their heavy defeat at Leeds, beating Hull City 2-1 at St James’ Park to end the visitors’ unbeaten start to the Premier League season.

Joe Willock opened the scoring in the third minute, finishing Harvey Barnes’ through-ball, and Lewis Hall doubled the lead just four minutes later with a low shot into the bottom corner after another Barnes assist. Newcastle then missed a chance to go 3-0 up before half-time when Yoane Wissa’s penalty was saved by Hull goalkeeper Konstantinos Tzolakis.

Hull pulled a goal back in the 67th minute through Mohamed-Ali Cho, setting up a tense finish, but Newcastle held on for their first home league win of the campaign under Matthias Jaissle. The result moved Newcastle to eight points from five matches and ended Hull’s unbeaten run.

Jaissle praised his side’s response after the Leeds loss. “I’m very proud of how we played this game, especially the second half,” he said, highlighting the team’s resilience when Hull pushed for an equaliser. Hall, recently recalled to the England squad, was named man of the match for his goal and overall display.
