Brighton Deliver Statement Win, Hand Champions Arsenal First Loss of the Season

Brighton delivered a statement win on the south coast, handing reigning Premier League champions Arsenal their first defeat of the season with a commanding 3-0 victory at the Amex Stadium.

Pascal Gross opened the scoring in the 31st minute with a powerful shot that took a slight deflection off Gabriel before beating David Raya. Charalampos Kostoulas doubled the lead on the stroke of half-time, and Chema Andrés made it 3-0 in the 57th minute, heading in from close range after a corner. The result ended Arsenal’s perfect start and their seven-match winning run across all competitions.

Brighton’s early goal proved decisive. The Seagulls have now avoided defeat in their last 10 Premier League matches when scoring first, a run stretching back to a 2-1 home loss to Fulham in January 2026. Against Arsenal, they controlled large periods, limited the champions to few clear chances and could have added more through Pascal Struijk, Matt O’Riley and Malick Yalcouye.

Elsewhere in the Premier League, Everton extended their unbeaten start with a 1-0 win over Ipswich at Goodison Park. Thierno Barry scored in the 11th minute, diverting James Tarkowski’s long-range effort into the net, and was later denied a second by VAR. Abdul Fatawu was sent off for Ipswich after picking up two yellow cards, and David Moyes’ side moved up to fifth in the table.

For Brighton, the victory reinforced their status as early top-four contenders and underlined Fabian Hürzeler’s side’s ability to beat elite opponents. For Arsenal, the defeat raised immediate questions about defensive organisation and midfield control, with Mikel Arteta describing the performance as a “big lesson” before the international break.
