Madrid Derby Preview: Real Madrid Travel to Atletico with Second Place at Stake

The Madrid derby at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano carries major significance in the early La Liga table, with second place effectively at stake between Real Madrid and Atlético Madrid.

Barcelona lead the way with 21 points from seven matches, having won all their games. Real Madrid sit second on 15 points after five wins and one defeat, while Atlético are fourth on 13 points, having recorded four wins, one draw and one loss. A victory for Atlético would move them above Real Madrid into second place going into the international break.

Recent history at the Metropolitano favours Atlético. Real Madrid have won only two of their past 11 away matches in this fixture across all competitions, and their last La Liga victory at the stadium came in 2022. Atlético’s 5-2 win there last September was followed by Real Madrid’s 3-2 comeback victory in March 2026, which ended a six-game winless league run against their city rivals.

The tactical duel between José Mourinho and Diego Simeone adds another layer of interest. Mourinho has not faced Simeone in a league match for 12 years, but he has beaten him in all three of their previous La Liga meetings as Real Madrid manager. Atlético, meanwhile, have suffered two or more consecutive league defeats to Real Madrid on only two occasions under Simeone.

Both sides enter the match with the joint-best defensive record in the division after six games, each having conceded six goals. Real Madrid have scored 17 league goals, Atlético 16. Opta’s supercomputer gives Real Madrid a 46.6 per cent chance of victory, with Atlético and a draw both rated lower.

Mourinho is expected to line up in a 4-2-3-1 structure. Thibaut Courtois is projected to start in goal, with Denzel Dumfries at right-back ahead of Trent Alexander-Arnold. Ibrahima Konaté and Dean Huijsen are anticipated to form the centre-back pairing, with Marc Cucurella at left-back. Federico Valverde and Aurélien Tchouaméni are likely to operate as the double pivot, while Arda Güler, Jude Bellingham and Vinícius Júnior support Kylian Mbappé in attack.

Simeone could deploy a back three, similar to his setup in recent Champions League matches. Jan Oblak is expected in goal, with Marc Pubill, Cristian Romero and Dávid Hancko forming a three. Marcos Llorente, Koke, Morten Hjulmand and Giuliano Simeone may make up a midfield four, with Kang-In Lee and Álex Baena supporting Jonathan David up front. An alternative 4-4-2 would see Llorente, Romero, Robin Le Normand and Alejandro Grimaldo as a back four, with Koke anchoring midfield.

After the international break, Atlético travel to Deportivo Alavés, while Real Madrid host Villarreal. For both teams, the immediate priority is to avoid a setback that would widen the gap to Barcelona and hand their city rival a psychological advantage heading into October.
