FC Cincinnati have finalized a major international transfer, securing former Manchester United defender Tyrell Malacia on a free transfer. The 27-year-old Dutch left-back completed his medical tests and trial in Ohio earlier this week, putting pen to paper on a contract running through June 2027 with a club option for the 2027-28 Major League Soccer season. To clear the necessary roster space for the high-profile arrival, the Eastern Conference club placed defender Matt Miazga on waivers earlier this month.

Malacia arrives in North America boasting more than 250 European club appearances, having built his reputation as a tenacious, technically gifted full-back. After making his name with Feyenoord, he completed a €15 million move to Old Trafford in the summer of 2022. His debut campaign in England was impressive, featuring 39 times across all competitions for the Red Devils during the 2022-23 season. However, a severe knee injury sustained in the summer of 2023 derailed his momentum, sidelining him for an extended period.

The Netherlands international made his return to competitive action in November 2024 under manager Ruben Amorim, playing a handful of matches before completing a loan spell at PSV Eindhoven to wrap up the 2024-25 campaign. In his final season under contract with Manchester United, Malacia saw limited league action, making three substitute appearances totaling 15 minutes before officially departing upon the expiry of his contract. Armed with nine international caps for the Dutch national team, the defender now looks to reignite his career in the United States.

For FC Cincinnati, adding a player with elite European experience reinforces their ambitions as they push for a position in the MLS playoffs. Sitting ninth in the Eastern Conference standings, the club views Malacia as a vital tactical asset for their backline as domestic competition intensifies.
