Kylian Mbappé has described José Mourinho as “one of the smartest people” he has met, praising the Real Madrid head coach’s leadership and influence after the Portuguese manager’s return to the Santiago Bernabéu.
Speaking to Diario AS, Mbappé reflected on the managers who have influenced his career, naming Carlo Ancelotti, Xabi Alonso, Álvaro Arbeloa and Mourinho among the most important figures he has worked with.
“All four are important figures in football,” Mbappé said. “It is always a privilege to be part of their journey. I learned things from each of them because they all see football differently. They are winners, and you always learn from winners.”
The France captain singled out Mourinho for particular praise, saying that working with the 63-year-old every day had reinforced his longstanding admiration for the former Chelsea, Inter Milan and Real Madrid manager.
“But it is true that with Mourinho, it is different,” Mbappé added. “He is one of the smartest people I have ever met. A true leader. I knew that before he arrived, but when you work with him every day, you realise what a special person and legendary coach he is.”
Mourinho began his second spell as Real Madrid head coach during the summer, returning to the club more than a decade after his first tenure. Mbappé said the Portuguese coach’s track record, communication and ability to motivate players have quickly made an impact inside the squad.
“Mourinho brings his whole career,” Mbappé said earlier this month. “He is a guy who knows how to win, how to have a group around him, and he knows how to give motivation to the whole group.”
The appreciation is mutual. Mourinho has defended Mbappé against criticism from sections of the Real Madrid support and praised both the forward’s output and his effort for the team.
“A player who scores more than 40 goals for a team is never a problem,” Mourinho said. “I saw Kylian giving it his all. He was defending like an animal, even when he had nothing left. His attitude is incredible.”
As Real Madrid pursue domestic and European success, the relationship between Mourinho and Mbappé is becoming one of the defining storylines of the season. Mbappé’s admiration for his manager reflects a shared focus on leadership, intensity and the pursuit of silverware at the highest level.
