The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has officially confirmed the schedule for the fifth edition of the TATA Women’s Premier League (WPL), locking in the window for the marquee tournament from January 14 to February 7, 2027. The decision establishes the timeline for the largest T20 league in women’s cricket as five franchises prepare for an intensive phase of squad restructuring. With key operational dates now settled, the league enters a critical planning period ahead of what promises to be an action-packed start to the 2027 cricket calendar.
Franchises don’t have long to finalize their initial roster moves. The BCCI has set September 28 as the firm deadline for teams to submit their final list of retained players from existing squads. Once retentions are finalized, attention shifts directly to the player auction, which is scheduled for October 28 at the Grand Hyatt Kochi. Teams will head to Kochi with a narrow window to refine their tactical boards and squad combinations before entering the bidding room to reshape their rosters for the upcoming campaign.
Preparations for the fifth edition extend to venue selection as well, with the BCCI actively evaluating host facilities across the country. Mumbai’s Brabourne Stadium and the Kotambi Stadium in Vadodara have emerged as prominent candidates under consideration to host matches for the 2027 season. The league has firmly established itself as a vital platform for global cricket, offering a stage where top international stars and leading domestic players compete alongside emerging talent at the highest level.
The WPL’s early-year slot serves as the opening act of an unusually packed period for women’s cricket in India. Immediately following the conclusion of the final on February 7, the focus will transition to the inaugural Women’s Champions Trophy, set to take place from February 14 to 28. Originally designated for Sri Lanka, the marquee international tournament was shifted to India, creating an unprecedented back-to-back showcase of elite women’s competition on Indian soil.
For the five participating franchises, the coming weeks demand meticulous strategy as they balance retentions against open slots for the Kochi auction. By providing young domestic talent direct access to international-standard competition and elite coaching, the TATA WPL continues to drive the overall growth of the sport. With the retention deadline fast approaching and auction plans being drawn up, all five teams are now locked in a high-stakes race to build championship-caliber squads for January.
