Leeds Secure Goal Appeal as Darlow’s Manchester United Debut Ends in Shock Defeat

Leeds United successfully appealed the disputed second goal from their 4–1 win over Newcastle, and Dominic Calvert-Lewin is now officially credited with the strike. The decision raises his Premier League total to three goals, removes the assist previously assigned to him, and awards the assist to James Justin.

The 34th-minute goal was initially awarded to Calvert-Lewin, then changed during the match to Jayden Bogle after officials judged that the ball had made final contact with the full-back. Leeds challenged that decision, and a three-person appeals panel reviewed footage from the incident before restoring the goal to Calvert-Lewin.

Leeds’ 4–1 victory extended their unbeaten start and moved them up to third in the Premier League. They now prepare for Sunday’s home fixture against Crystal Palace, with the win over Newcastle providing strong momentum before that match.

The statistical correction is also relevant to fantasy football records: Calvert-Lewin receives the goal, while Justin receives the assist; Bogle loses the goal credit. The official club announcement confirms that Leeds’ records will be updated accordingly.

Karl Darlow’s Manchester United debut produced a very different result. The former Leeds goalkeeper started against Brighton in Wednesday’s Carabao Cup third-round tie, but United surrendered a 2–0 lead and lost 3–2 at Old Trafford. Shea Lacey and Mason Mount gave United the early advantage before Charalampos Kostoulas, Pascal Groß and Maxim De Cuyper completed Brighton’s comeback.

Darlow was criticised for his handling of Brighton’s first goal, though United’s defeat reflected wider defensive failures rather than one goalkeeper’s performance alone. The loss eliminated United from the Carabao Cup for a second consecutive season and increased pressure on manager Michael Carrick.
