Manchester United Collapses at Old Trafford as Brighton Stages Thrilling 3-2 Comeback

Manchester United suffered a catastrophic collapse at Old Trafford, blowing a two-goal lead to crash out of the Carabao Cup third round in a 3-2 defeat against Brighton. The Red Devils looked in total control early on, sweeping into a commanding position within the opening ten minutes of the tie. However, a spirited fightback from the Seagulls exposed United’s lingering defensive vulnerabilities, turning a promising evening into absolute heartbreak for the hosts.

The night couldn’t have started better for United as teenage winger Shea Lacey made an instant impact on his maiden senior start. Just seven minutes in, Lacey gathered a pass from Youri Tielemans on the right side of the penalty area before hammering a sharp strike past an unsighted Jason Steele. It was a moment of redemption for Lacey, who had been sent off against Brighton in last season’s FA Cup defeat at Old Trafford. Merely two minutes later, Mason Mount doubled United’s advantage. After Marcus Rashford saw his attempt denied by Steele, Mount reacted fastest to bounce the rebound finish over the stranded goalkeeper, capping off a quickfire opening spell that seemed to ease bad memories of United’s past domestic cup setbacks, including an embarrassing penalty shootout loss to League Two side Grimsby.

Despite trailing 2-0 early on, Brighton—who made six changes to their side and altered their tactical formation—refused to buckle. They gradually seized control of the contest, demonstrating why they’ve scored the most goals in the Premier League this season. Malick Yalcouye signalled the visitors’ intent when played in behind by Pascal Gross, only to whip his effort wide, before Gross himself thrashed an opportunity over the crossbar from close range. Brighton’s persistence finally paid off on the stroke of half-time when Charalampos Kostoulas pulled a goal back in the first minute of stoppage time, completely shifting the momentum heading into the interval.

The second half saw Brighton dominate sustained spells of possession as United struggled to stem the tide. Pascal Gross found the crucial equaliser in the 65th minute, slotting home smoothly to punish United’s defensive drift. Just five minutes later, the turnaround was complete. Maxim De Cuyper struck in the 70th minute to put Brighton 3-2 ahead, silencing Old Trafford. United were unable to construct a response in the closing stages, sealing their exit from the competition in bitter fashion.
