Yves Bissouma Completes Free Transfer to Ajax Following Tottenham Exit

Yves Bissouma has completed a move to Dutch giants Ajax, signing an initial contract that runs until the end of the season following his departure from Tottenham Hotspur. The 30-year-old Mali international defensive midfielder, who became a free agent after his contract in north London expired in June, has been handed the number 28 shirt in Amsterdam. The agreement also includes an option to extend his stay for an additional 12 months, ending months of uncertainty surrounding his next destination.

Ajax technical director Jordi Cruyff confirmed the club had been in active discussions with the midfielder since August to secure his signature. Cruyff highlighted the qualities the experienced midfielder brings to the squad, pointing out his ability to operate effectively across multiple positions in the center of the pitch. Cruyff stated that the club brought in an experienced player who knows what it takes to perform at the highest level, expressing hope that Bissouma will be available for selection as soon as possible.

Bissouma expressed his delight after finalizing his transfer to the Eredivisie club, emphasizing that joining Ajax represents a deeply meaningful step in his career. The former Brighton player explained that he had spoken with key figures at the club beforehand to understand their overall project, which ultimately convinced him to make the switch to the Netherlands. “I’m really happy,” Bissouma said. “This move is very meaningful for me because Ajax is one of the biggest clubs in Europe. It’s a beautiful thing to be part of this great club’s journey. I wasn’t surprised by the offer. I had spoken with many people here beforehand. They explained the club’s project to me, and it was very interesting. That’s why I’m here.”

The move marks a fresh chapter for the Malian midfielder, whose four-season tenure in north London came to an end following the conclusion of the campaign. Having originally joined Tottenham from Brighton in 2022, Bissouma went on to make 111 appearances for Spurs. However, his playing time decreased during his final year at the club, where he featured just 11 times—all in the Premier League—before his summer release.

During his time in England, Bissouma formed a notably close bond with former Tottenham forward Son Heung-min, often sharing dance celebrations and training ground banter while affectionately referring to the South Korean star as his “big brother” prior to Son’s departure to MLS side LAFC in the summer of 2025. Now embarking on his next adventure in Dutch football, Bissouma’s immediate priority will be integrating into Ajax’s setup as he looks to return to regular action.
