A serious rift has erupted inside the French national team as Ballon d’Or winner Ousmane Dembele expressed fury over recent public remarks made by Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappe. What had previously been quiet dissatisfaction behind the scenes has spilled into an open disagreement, fracturing squad unity. With Mbappe actively pushing his own credentials for individual honors, his characterization of their respective career paths has drawn a sharp response from his long-time international teammate.
At the center of the dispute are statements from Mbappe in which he designated himself as the chosen one who reached the summit of world football at an early age. In contrast, Mbappe categorized Dembele as merely gifted while pointing to his history of injuries, claiming the Paris Saint-Germain winger had to work to make up for lost time. That public assessment served as the tipping point for Dembele, who had previously chosen to stay silent despite disagreeing with earlier declarations from the forward. Dembele fired back firmly, rejecting the narrative and emphasizing his work ethic, noting he always sat at the back of the class and worked hard without ever being designated a chosen one.
The fallout has disrupted the atmosphere within the French camp. Former PSG midfielder Jerome Rothen confirmed that Dembele views Mbappe’s remarks as a direct betrayal. A significant portion of the squad now sides with Dembele, frustrated by Mbappe’s repeated self-aggrandizing statements. The situation has effectively split the squad into two distinct factions. Tensions are further heightened by squad dynamics where lighthearted dressing room banter—such as Dembele using the nickname Mobutu toward Mbappe—has taken on a heavier tone amid accusations of dictatorial behavior.
While both players shared the ultimate glory of winning the 2018 FIFA World Cup with France—where Mbappe lifted the trophy at 19 years and 207 days old—as well as suffering defeat in the 2022 final and exiting in the 2026 semifinals, their club achievements present a stark contrast. Mbappe continues to chase his first European crown, having never won the UEFA Champions League. Dembele, on the other hand, has already conquered Europe twice with PSG, providing substantial weight to his standing as the current holder of the Ballon d’Or.
Although Mbappe was reportedly taken by surprise by the intensity of Dembele’s reaction, the Real Madrid star has so far chosen not to respond publicly. Dembele maintains he is focused on his work with PSG and following individual awards without pressure, but the rift between two of France’s primary figures presents an immediate challenge for national team management moving forward.
