Arsenal head into Tuesday night’s Carabao Cup third-round tie against Ipswich Town at Portman Road severely depleted in defence, with Ben White adding to a rapidly expanding list of backline casualties. White was withdrawn at half-time during the Gunners’ 2-0 victory over Sunderland at the Stadium of Light after suffering a suspected groin injury. With the defender missing training and remaining a major doubt for the trip to Suffolk, manager Mikel Arteta faces an unprecedented selection crisis. The shortage is compounded by the absence of Piero Hincapie, who suffered a muscular injury despite taking part in training earlier in the week, alongside long-term absentee William Saliba, who remains sidelined with a back problem sustained on international duty with France during the World Cup. With Jurrien Timber and Cristhian Mosquera also ruled out, Arsenal travel to Ipswich without five senior defenders.
The extensive injury list has forced Arteta into radical tactical adjustments ahead of the midweek cup encounter. Midfielder Martin Zubimendi is set to be deployed in an unfamiliar right-back role to cover for the absent defensive options, while Myles Lewis-Skelly has been forced back into a left-back slot. In central defence, youngster Marli Salmon is slated to start alongside Gabriel Magalhaes as Arteta turns to academy talent to construct a makeshift backline. The cup tie nevertheless opens the door for pre-season breakout star Max Dowman. Despite playing extensively throughout pre-season, the wonderkid is yet to log a single minute of senior football this campaign while Bukayo Saka and Noni Madueke have occupied the right flank. However, Arteta has promised Dowman game time at Portman Road as the north London club seeks to build on their 100 per cent start to the season.
For newly-promoted Ipswich Town, Tuesday night presents an ideal opportunity to harness the energy of Portman Road under the floodlights against top-flight opposition. Gary O’Neil’s side enter the contest buoyed by a dramatic 3-2 away victory over Crystal Palace, which marked their second Premier League win of the campaign. Having previously missed the chance to capitalize against Liverpool in a 2-0 defeat, Ipswich are eager to test one of the country’s form teams. O’Neil is expected to line up in a 4-2-3-1 formation featuring Walton in goal behind a defensive line of O’Shea, Diop, Kipré, and Davis. Núñez and Luís are set to anchor the midfield behind an attacking trio of Philogene, Enciso, and Clarke, with Saturday’s match-winner Zian Flemming positioned to lead the line if Emersonn is ruled out. Former Arsenal forward Chuba Akpom also offers a potent option off the bench. Ipswich have injury concerns of their own, however, with midfielder Jack Taylor remaining sidelined with a knee problem having not yet featured this season, while uncertainty lingers over Azor Matusiwa following a thigh complaint.
The fixture also revives memories of shared history between the two clubs, most notably through former striker Francis Jeffers. After moving to Arsenal in 2001, Jeffers later enjoyed a productive month-long loan spell with Ipswich Town in 2007, recording seven goal contributions in nine matches. Though Ipswich failed with three subsequent bids to secure him on a permanent deal, Jeffers maintained a strong connection with the Suffolk support despite holding regrets over his difficult tenure in north London. As Arteta’s reshuffled lineup prepares to step out at Portman Road, both sides carry high stakes into a compelling midweek cup battle. Arsenal aim to navigate their severe squad limitations, while Ipswich seek a landmark result under the lights.
