VfB Stuttgart sporting director Fabian Wohlgemuth has confirmed that Stuttgart considered signing Borussia Dortmund forward Fábio Silva before his move to the Westfalenstadion. It was past interest rather than a new approach, however, and there is no evidence that Dortmund are currently preparing to sell the Portuguese striker.
Wohlgemuth revealed that Stuttgart had looked into Silva “around a year ago,” but said the possibility never became concrete. He declined to predict Silva’s long-term future, explaining that he was too removed from Dortmund’s internal situation, while praising the player’s current form. “Obviously, he is in a good spell at the moment, and Dortmund can therefore be happy that they have him,” Wohlgemuth said.
Silva joined Dortmund from Wolverhampton Wanderers in August 2025 on a five-year contract running until June 30, 2030. Dortmund described him at the time as a versatile, hard-working attacker with pace, goal threat and the ability to operate in several forward roles. That means his contract does not expire beyond 2027, as stated in the original report; he has nearly four years remaining on his deal.
The 24-year-old has started the 2026–27 season strongly. He scored in Dortmund’s 3–0 Bundesliga win over SC Paderborn and has four goals in his first five competitive appearances of the campaign. His form has helped shift the perception of a player who was linked with a departure during the summer.
Dortmund were willing to listen to offers for Silva earlier in the transfer window, with reports suggesting the club would seek at least €20 million to €22.5 million—roughly the amount paid to Wolves. Real Betis and Real Sociedad were among clubs reportedly interested, while other enquiries were said to have come from Spain, the Netherlands, Portugal and Turkey. Silva ultimately opted to stay and compete for a role under Niko Kovač.
Kovač has made clear that Serhou Guirassy remains Dortmund’s first-choice centre-forward, describing Silva as the challenger. But the coach has also suggested he could use a two-striker system to accommodate both players if Silva continues to produce.
The original report incorrectly refers to a newly appointed Dortmund sporting director replacing Sebastian Kehl. The public confirmation came from Stuttgart’s Wohlgemuth, not a new Borussia Dortmund executive. Sebastian Kehl was Dortmund’s sporting director when Silva joined in 2025, while Lars Ricken has held the senior sporting leadership role at the club.
Claims involving Bayern Munich enquiries for Nico Schlotterbeck and Franculino Djú, Joey Veerman’s unnamed teammate praise, Dortmund’s Villarreal team news, Karim Adeyemi links to Manchester United and Chelsea, and Mike Maignan’s future are unrelated to the confirmed Stuttgart–Silva story. They should be omitted unless each claim is separately sourced and independently verified.
