Liverpool Lead £43m Battle for Paul Wanner Amid Real Madrid and Bayern Munich Interest

Liverpool are reportedly monitoring PSV Eindhoven midfielder Paul Wanner as they assess future additions in midfield, but any move for the 20-year-old would involve competition from Bayern Munich, Real Madrid and Manchester City. PSV are said to value Wanner at €45 million to €50 million—approximately £38.5 million to £42.8 million—although there is no indication that a formal offer has been submitted by any club.

Wanner, an Austria international who can operate as an attacking midfielder or in a deeper central role, joined PSV permanently from Bayern in 2025 after progressing through the German club’s academy. His versatility and development in the Netherlands have attracted attention across Europe, with reports suggesting Liverpool have been closely following him as a potential long-term option rather than pursuing an immediate, confirmed transfer.

Bayern could hold an important advantage if the interest develops into formal negotiations. Multiple reports indicate that Bayern included a mechanism in Wanner’s deal with PSV that would give them either a buy-back route or preferential rights in the event of a sale. The exact terms have not been publicly confirmed, so it would be premature to state that Bayern can automatically reclaim the player for a fixed fee. Still, that contractual position could give the Bundesliga club greater influence than Liverpool, Real Madrid or Manchester City.

The reported £43 million figure should also be treated as PSV’s approximate valuation, rather than an agreed price. The Dutch champions are believed to prefer keeping Wanner, but may consider a sale if an offer is sufficiently attractive and includes favorable bonus and future-sale provisions.

Liverpool’s interest comes after a summer that reshaped the squad. Curtis Jones joined Inter Milan in a deal reported to be worth £30 million, while senior players Mohamed Salah, Andy Robertson and Ibrahima Konaté also departed when their contracts expired. Liverpool have already spent heavily on attacking talent in recent windows, including Florian Wirtz, Alexander Isak and Bradley Barcola, leaving midfield depth as a plausible area for longer-term planning.

Manager Andoni Iraola has spoken about avoiding short-term recruitment simply for the sake of making additions, a stance consistent with a cautious approach to Wanner. Liverpool have promising younger midfield options, including Trey Nyoni, but Wanner’s profile offers a different attraction: he is young enough to develop, yet already has top-flight experience and can play multiple positions across midfield and attack.

Reports linking Liverpool with Roma’s Manu Koné, Chelsea with the same player, or Real Madrid with a January move for Arsenal’s Martín Zubimendi should be handled separately from the Wanner story. The available reporting on Wanner supports interest and scouting from several elite clubs, not an active bidding war, a Liverpool-led race, or confirmed January negotiations.

For Liverpool, Wanner appears to be a player of interest rather than a completed priority. Bayern’s reported contractual protections, PSV’s substantial valuation and the number of clubs credited with interest mean that any deal would likely depend on developments later in the season—not merely Liverpool’s willingness to meet an initial asking price.
