Coventry City’s search for their first Premier League points ended in a heavy 5–0 defeat to Brighton at the Coventry Building Society Arena. The result left Frank Lampard’s side bottom of the table with four consecutive losses and no goals scored, while Brighton moved up to fourth after a dominant second-half display.

Brighton took the lead just before half-time through Charalampos Kostoulas, who finished from close range after Coventry’s defence failed to clear a cross. The visitors then pulled away after the break, with Malick Yalcouyé, Pascal Groß (from the penalty spot), Lewis Dunk and Yasin Ayari all scoring as Coventry’s resistance collapsed.

Coventry had competed reasonably for the opening 30 minutes, but the timing of the first goal proved decisive. Lampard’s side were unable to create meaningful chances against Brighton’s structure, and their inability to score in four successive top-flight matches became a historic low: they are only the second club in Premier League history to lose their first four games without finding the net.

Brighton’s performance was built on controlled possession, quick transitions and effective set-piece work. Yalcouyé’s goal early in the second half effectively killed the contest, and Coventry’s task was made harder when they were reduced to 10 men, although the dismissal came late enough that the scoreline was already heavily skewed.

Lampard described the afternoon as “difficult” and acknowledged that the scoreline reflected how badly the game had gone for his side. The immediate focus for Coventry is to break their goal drought and find a way to turn promising periods of play into tangible results, because four defeats without a point or a goal have intensified the pressure on the newly promoted club.
