Tottenham Hotspur have confirmed that Lucas Bergvall has signed a new long-term contract, ending a summer of uncertainty over the 20-year-old midfielder’s future. The Sweden international said he believes Spurs are “building something great” under Roberto De Zerbi and remains convinced that the club is the right place to pursue his ambitions.
Bergvall joined Tottenham from Djurgården in 2024 and has made 80 first-team appearances in all competitions. He had already agreed a contract extension in 2025 that ran until 2031, but Spurs have now improved and extended his terms again; the precise duration and financial details have not been officially disclosed.
“I think we’re building something great here,” Bergvall said. “It’s an exciting time for the club and that’s why I’m happy to extend my contract. I’m always trying to achieve as much as possible, to be the best version of myself both on and off the pitch and I know this is the right place to do that.”
The renewal represents a substantial shift from earlier in the summer. Bergvall reportedly told Tottenham three months ago that he was open to leaving because he was concerned about his level of game time. Nottingham Forest had a £38 million offer rejected, Newcastle United were also reported to have made an approach, and Chelsea and Aston Villa were linked with the midfielder.
A conversation with De Zerbi during Tottenham’s pre-season tour appears to have changed Bergvall’s outlook. The manager reassured him that he had a clear development plan and that opportunities would come over the course of the campaign, despite intense competition for midfield places.
De Zerbi has praised Bergvall’s mentality, saying: “Every day in training you can see Lucas’ desire to learn, improve and push himself to the highest level. Lucas is brave, he wants responsibility and has the personality to play in big moments.” The head coach has also warned that Sandro Tonali, Rodrigo Bentancur and Conor Gallagher are ahead of him in a crowded midfield group, but expects the Swede to make a meaningful contribution during the season.
