Semi Ajayi played an important role as Hull City earned a 2–2 draw at Chelsea, but the original account contains a major match-detail error: he did not score Hull’s goals or directly create Chelsea’s opener. Morgan Rogers gave Chelsea an early lead, Mohamed Belloumi scored twice for Hull, and João Pedro equalised in the second half.
Hull travelled to Stamford Bridge unbeaten after three Premier League matches and had not conceded a league goal, following clean sheets against Manchester United, Coventry City and Aston Villa. Ajayi, the 32-year-old Nigeria international, had started each of those fixtures and was a central part of Sergej Jakirović’s compact defensive unit.

Instead, Hull recovered impressively. Belloumi levelled in the 28th minute, finishing from Ryan Giles’ cross, before putting the Tigers ahead six minutes later after Oli McBurnie found him inside the penalty area. Hull’s ability to stay organised without the ball and strike efficiently in attack allowed them to turn a difficult opening into a half-time lead.
Ajayi and his defensive colleagues then faced sustained Chelsea pressure. The hosts dominated possession, with reports placing their share at about two-thirds, and pushed for an equaliser through Rogers, Cole Palmer and João Pedro. Hull’s defensive discipline ensured Chelsea were unable to turn control of the ball into a steady stream of clear chances.
Chelsea finally made their pressure count in the 66th minute. Palmer created an opening on the right and sent a low cross into the area, where João Pedro arrived to power his finish into the roof of the net. The Brazilian’s goal rescued a point, but it also extended Chelsea’s troubling defensive pattern under Alonso: they have now conceded in all four Premier League fixtures this season.
For Hull, the draw was another significant result in an outstanding start following promotion. Their opening clean-sheet streak ended, but they remained unbeaten after four league matches and demonstrated that they can respond under pressure against one of the division’s strongest attacking teams. Ajayi’s contribution was representative of the wider collective effort rather than a single match-defining intervention: Hull defended deep, competed physically and maintained enough composure to leave Stamford Bridge with a deserved point.
