Lucas Bergvall has committed his long-term future to Tottenham Hotspur by signing a new contract, ending a summer in which he had considered leaving in pursuit of more regular football. The 20-year-old Sweden international said he believes Spurs are “building something great” under head coach Roberto De Zerbi and that the club remains the right place for his development.
Bergvall joined Tottenham from Djurgården in 2024 and has made 80 appearances in all competitions for the club. He was already contracted until 2031, but Tottenham have now extended his terms; while the club did not disclose the duration, reports indicate that the new agreement runs until 2032 and includes a substantial salary increase.
“I think we’re building something great here,” Bergvall said after the announcement. “It’s an exciting time for the club and that’s why I’m happy to extend my contract. I’m always trying to achieve as much as possible, to be the best version of myself both on and off the pitch and I know this is the right place to do that.”
The midfielder said he wants to deliver more goals, assists and influential performances for Tottenham, adding that he feels he is improving every day in training and is looking forward to what he expects to be a strong season. Bergvall has featured only briefly in the Premier League so far this campaign, playing 45 minutes, but De Zerbi has indicated that he expects him to contribute across a long season.
The renewal represents a significant reversal. Bergvall reportedly informed Tottenham three months ago that he wanted to leave because of concerns over limited game time, and Nottingham Forest had a £38 million bid rejected during the summer. Newcastle United, Aston Villa and Chelsea were also linked with the midfielder, but a constructive pre-season discussion with De Zerbi appears to have changed his outlook.
De Zerbi praised the midfielder’s attitude and described him as a player with the character to develop into an important figure at the club. “Every day in training you can see Lucas’ desire to learn, improve and push himself to the highest level,” the Spurs head coach said. “Lucas is brave, he wants responsibility and has the personality to play in big moments.”
The manager also cautioned that Bergvall faces substantial competition in midfield, naming Sandro Tonali, Rodrigo Bentancur and Conor Gallagher, but said he expects the young Swede to play a part in many matches by the end of the season. Tottenham sporting director Johan Lange called Bergvall “an outstanding young player with enormous potential” and said the club sees him as important both now and in the future.
Bergvall joins Micky van de Ven, Pedro Porro and Antonín Kinský among Spurs players to agree new deals in recent months. His decision gives De Zerbi an important vote of confidence as Tottenham seek to establish greater stability after a summer that also left Richarlison excluded from the club’s Premier League squad following the collapse of his proposed move to Vasco da Gama.
