Liverpool Football Club has unveiled permanent memorials at the AXA Melwood Training Centre and outside Anfield Stadium to honour former women’s team manager Matt Beard, recognizing his extraordinary contribution and lasting impact across every level of the organization. Beard, who was widely regarded as one of the most influential coaches in women’s football, passed away on 20 September 2025 at the age of 47. Ahead of the first anniversary of his passing, former players, club staff, and members of Beard’s family gathered to remember a manager whose legacy remains deeply embedded in the history of LFC Women.
The quiet tributes began with a private ceremony held at the AXA Melwood Training Centre on Friday. Current and former players, backroom staff, and Beard’s immediate family gathered together at the facility for the official unveiling of a memorial garden created in his name. Intended to serve as a quiet space for reflection and remembrance, the garden provides a lasting sanctuary within the training ground for those who worked alongside him. Following the gathering at Melwood, the remembrance continued at Anfield Stadium, where a commemorative tree was planted in his honour on 97 Avenue. The location creates a permanent place where fans can visit and reflect on his enduring connection to the club.
Beard’s managerial accomplishments established Liverpool as a premier side in women’s football over two separate tenures, first leading the team from 2012 to 2015 and returning for a second spell from 2021 to 2025. Under his leadership, Liverpool captured back-to-back Women’s Super League titles in 2013 and 2014. After returning to take charge in 2021, he successfully guided the club back to the WSL by winning the FA Women’s Championship title in 2022. His outstanding achievements on the touchline earned him two WSL Manager of the Season awards, and his legacy was formally celebrated earlier this year when he was inducted into the WSL Hall of Fame.
The unveiling of the physical memorials coincides with a wider club effort centered on mental health awareness and community welfare. Liverpool’s home Premier League match against Fulham on Saturday will be dedicated to the league’s Together Against Suicide initiative. Running from 4 to 14 September, the campaign is designed to foster open conversations around suicide prevention, raise awareness for available support services, and help remove the social stigma surrounding individuals seeking help.
