Lucas Bergvall has committed his long-term future to Tottenham Hotspur after signing a new contract that reportedly extends his stay in north London until 2032. The 20-year-old Swedish midfielder had been contracted until 2031, but Spurs have rewarded him with improved terms after a summer in which he considered leaving in search of more regular first-team football.
Bergvall joined Tottenham from Djurgården in 2024 and has made 80 appearances in all competitions for the club. He has scored two goals and registered nine assists, while his 2024–25 campaign included 10 Europa League starts before injury ruled him out of the final.
The midfielder told Tottenham three months ago that he wanted to leave after becoming concerned about his limited playing time under Roberto De Zerbi. Tottenham, however, remained determined to retain him and rejected a £38 million offer from Nottingham Forest. Aston Villa, Chelsea and Newcastle United also showed interest during the summer window.
Bergvall’s decision to extend followed discussions with De Zerbi, who outlined the player’s role in Tottenham’s longer-term plans. The manager has consistently praised the midfielder’s personality, appetite for responsibility and commitment to improving.
“I think we’re building something great here,” Bergvall said. “It’s an exciting time for the club and that’s why I’m happy to extend my contract. I’m always trying to achieve as much as possible, to be the best version of myself both on and off the pitch, and I know this is the right place to do that.”
Bergvall added that he wants to provide more goals, assists and decisive performances for the team. He has played 45 Premier League minutes this season, starting the opening defeat to Brentford before being substituted at half-time, and has not featured in the subsequent league matches against Newcastle United and Nottingham Forest.
De Zerbi welcomed the midfielder’s renewed commitment, saying: “Every day in training you can see Lucas’ desire to learn, improve and push himself to the highest level. Lucas is brave, he wants responsibility and has the personality to play in big moments. I believe his best football is still ahead of him.”
Tottenham have not publicly confirmed the length or financial terms of the deal. However, reports indicate that Bergvall’s new contract runs until 2032 and includes a substantial salary increase, giving Spurs greater certainty over the future of one of their most highly rated young players.
The agreement represents a significant reversal after a turbulent summer. Rather than leaving for immediate opportunities elsewhere, Bergvall has opted to remain at Tottenham and fight for a greater role as De Zerbi reshapes the squad.
