Kylian Mbappe Vows to Deliver Silverware After Claiming Real Madrid Player of the Month Award

Kylian Mbappé has been named Real Madrid’s Five Star Player for August after winning an online vote among the club’s supporters. The award capped a productive opening month for the France international, who scored five goals in his first five appearances of the season.

Mbappé also scored in Real Madrid’s 2-1 Champions League victory over Inter Milan at the Santiago Bernabéu. His 14th-minute finish was his 71st goal in the competition, moving him level with former Madrid striker Raúl in joint fifth on the all-time Champions League scoring list.

Only Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi, Robert Lewandowski and Karim Benzema have scored more Champions League goals. Mbappé reached 71 in 99 appearances, while Raúl needed 142 matches to reach the same total.

After receiving the award, Mbappé said he wanted to help Real Madrid win trophies and expressed his pride at representing the club. “I really want to help the team and show that we can do great things this year,” he said.

Real Madrid’s victory over Inter was secured by Mbappé and Federico Valverde, although the hosts had to withstand pressure after half-time. Inter pulled a goal back through Carlos Augusto, but José Mourinho’s side held on to begin their league-phase campaign with three points.

Mourinho also addressed the relationship between Aurélien Tchouaméni and Federico Valverde, saying he had not needed to intervene between the midfielders. He defended Vinícius Júnior after the Brazilian was booed, using the Portuguese proverb: “You only throw stones at trees that bear fruit.” Mourinho added that he believes the best version of Vinícius is still to come.
