Liverpool’s 2-1 Champions League comeback against Atlético Madrid offered another glimpse of Rio Ngumoha’s growing importance to the first team. The 18-year-old started on the left wing in his first Champions League start, played for an hour and repeatedly tried to attack Atlético’s defensive line rather than recycle possession.
Atlético took the lead through Marcos Llorente, but Liverpool responded through Dominik Szoboszlai before Alexis Mac Allister completed the comeback shortly after half-time. Ngumoha helped create the decisive goal with an incisive run and cross that caused a ricochet in the penalty area before Mac Allister struck from 20 yards.
The performance reflected the qualities Iraola has highlighted in Ngumoha: attacking ability must be matched by defensive work and consistent effort. “The manager knows I’m good at attacking but to play you have to be good at defending as well,” Ngumoha said after the match. “You just have to work hard.”
Ngumoha’s rise began last season when he became Liverpool’s youngest Premier League goalscorer with a late winner at Newcastle United. In April, he became the youngest player to score in a competitive match at Anfield, finding the net in a 2-0 victory over Fulham.
His development has given Iraola another option in a competitive Liverpool attack. Cody Gakpo missed the Atlético match with a minor adductor problem, while summer signing Bradley Barcola made his first start and Victor Muñoz remains another wide option. Ngumoha’s preference for the left side adds further competition, particularly while Liverpool assess how best to deploy Barcola and their other attacking players.
The teenager’s contribution against Atlético was promising rather than flawless: he worked hard, attempted two shots, completed two dribbles and won two fouls before being replaced after 60 minutes. Nevertheless, his willingness to receive the ball and drive forward gave Liverpool a different attacking dimension against one of Europe’s most experienced defensive teams.
Liverpool’s next Champions League fixture is away to LASK, while Ngumoha will hope his European performance strengthens his case for more opportunities in the Premier League. The club’s official figures list him as 18, and his current contract runs until 2028.
