Manuel Neuer wrote another chapter in European football history as Bayern Munich began the 2026/27 UEFA Champions League season with a 5-0 victory over Bodø/Glimt at the Football Arena Munich. The 40-year-old captain made his 18th appearance in a different Champions League campaign, setting a new record for a German player and moving clear of former Bayern teammate Thomas Müller, who featured in 17 editions of the competition.

Bayern had to remain patient in a goalless first half, but Jamal Musiala broke the deadlock two minutes after the restart. Harry Kane then headed in Michael Olise’s free kick in the 61st minute, before Alphonso Davies added a third. Olise completed the five-star display with two late goals, sealing a comprehensive result that gave Bayern an ideal start to their league-phase campaign.

Neuer’s latest milestone adds to an extraordinary Champions League record. Across spells with Schalke and Bayern, he has made 162 appearances in the competition, conceded 155 goals and recorded 64 clean sheets, while winning the European Cup twice. His appearance against Bodø/Glimt also made him the oldest German player in Champions League history, at 40 years and 167 days.

The clean sheet was a largely quiet night for Bayern’s goalkeeper, with Bodø/Glimt failing to register a shot on target as the hosts dominated possession and controlled the contest from start to finish. Bayern now turn their attention to their next European assignment against Viking, while Bodø/Glimt face Borussia Dortmund.

Neuer’s longevity remains one of the defining stories of the modern game. Now in his 16th season at Bayern after joining from Schalke in 2011, the veteran goalkeeper continues to combine experience, authority and elite-level consistency as Vincent Kompany’s side chase another deep run in Europe.
