Marcus Rashford has made clear that his priority is to re-establish himself at Manchester United after turning down opportunities to leave the club. The England forward has returned to training with renewed intensity and is now focused on proving that he can remain a central figure in Michael Carrick’s rebuilding project.
Rashford is under contract until 2028, but his long-term position at Old Trafford had been uncertain after a difficult period. Manchester United explored different options for his future, including a possible permanent transfer or loan, yet the forward chose to remain and fight for his place.
His return has already changed the mood around the squad. Bryan Mbeumo said Rashford appears happy to be back among his teammates, while his performances in pre-season and the opening fixtures have suggested a player determined to restore his best form.
Rashford started United’s 5–2 victory over Ipswich Town, his first Premier League start for the club since December 2024. He caused constant problems for the Ipswich defence, recorded seven touches inside the penalty area and produced four shots, two of which forced saves from goalkeeper Kjell Scherpen.
The match also highlighted the attacking approach Carrick wants to establish. United responded to an early setback by producing 33 shots, their highest total in a league match since 2016. Bruno Fernandes scored a hat-trick, Bryan Mbeumo added another and Jacob Greaves’ own goal completed a convincing comeback.
Rashford’s willingness to contribute to the team’s physical workload has been an important part of the change in perception. His pace remains one of United’s most dangerous weapons, but Carrick also expects greater pressing, defensive effort and consistency without the ball.
Fernandes remains the central figure in the attack. His hat-trick against Ipswich demonstrated both his finishing ability and his influence as captain, while his movement continues to alter the way opponents defend United. The Portuguese midfielder also supplied the assist for Mbeumo’s goal.
Kobbie Mainoo provided another positive sign after returning to the starting lineup. Carrick praised his composure and influence in midfield, while Lisandro Martínez also impressed after coming back into the side.
The attacking depth around Rashford has improved following the arrivals of Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha and Benjamin Šeško. That competition should make it harder for any forward to retain a starting position without producing regularly, but it also gives Rashford more creative and athletic players with whom to combine.
United’s immediate objective is to convert the energy of the Ipswich victory into consistency. The team lost its opening match against Hull City and must now show that the response at Old Trafford was the beginning of a genuine improvement rather than a one-off performance.
For Rashford, the opportunity is clear. A sustained run of goals, improved work rate and greater involvement in Carrick’s pressing system could transform discussions about his future. Instead of being treated as a player United might move on, he can become one of the main symbols of the club’s attempted revival.
