Manchester City maintained their perfect start under Enzo Maresca with a narrow 1–0 victory over Coventry City. Erling Haaland scored the only goal, while new signing Enzo Fernández made an immediate impact on his debut as City claimed a third win from three Premier League matches.
Fernández was initially named among the substitutes but entered the starting lineup after Nico O’Reilly suffered an injury during the warm-up. The £125 million deadline-day arrival helped create the goal, releasing Antoine Semenyo with a well-timed pass before Semenyo delivered the cross for Haaland’s 26th-minute header.
The goal was Haaland’s 300th in senior club football. He reached the milestone in 368 appearances, with 165 goals for Manchester City, 86 for Borussia Dortmund, 29 for Red Bull Salzburg and 20 for Molde.
Despite the victory, City did not produce a fully convincing performance. Coventry defended with discipline and created opportunities of their own, while City’s commitment to building from the back occasionally created danger. Gianluigi Donnarumma made important saves from Jack Rudoni and Ellis Simms, and also benefited when Taiwo Awoniyi failed to convert a one-on-one chance.
City thought they had scored a second goal when Fernández assisted Haaland again, but the finish was ruled out for offside. The narrow margin left Coventry believing they could take something from the match until the final whistle.
The result keeps City top of the table with nine points and extends Maresca’s winning start. Nevertheless, the performance highlighted the attacking burden still carried by Haaland following Julián Álvarez’s departure. City have invested heavily during the transfer window, but the squad is still adapting to the loss of Rodri’s influence and the arrival of several new players.
Tottenham’s problems were even more obvious in their 0–0 draw with Nottingham Forest. Spurs secured their first point of the season but failed to register a shot on target, continuing a worrying attacking trend under Roberto De Zerbi.
Tottenham did have 12 attempts overall, but none tested Matz Sels. Forest also had a potential winner disallowed after VAR ruled that Neco Williams had handled the ball before scoring. The decision left Oliver Glasner furious and ensured that both teams remained without a Premier League victory.
The match further exposed Tottenham’s lack of attacking cohesion. Despite their summer investment and a revamped squad, Spurs have failed to score in their first three league matches. For De Zerbi, improving the team’s final-third play is now an immediate priority.
Mykhailo Mudryk faces a different but related challenge at club level. With Premier League managers under constant pressure to win, few can afford to select a player repeatedly simply to help him regain match sharpness. Mudryk must therefore demonstrate his readiness in training and make the most of limited opportunities if he is to force his way into the starting lineup.
At Atlético Madrid, Julián Álvarez is also attempting to repair a strained relationship with supporters. The Argentine forward made clear during the summer that he wanted to join Barcelona, but Atlético rejected offers and the transfer window closed with him still at the club.
Álvarez now has to remain focused on Atlético at least until January. His performances, attitude and professionalism will determine whether he can rebuild trust with the supporters and re-establish himself as a central figure in Diego Simeone’s team.
Across the three clubs, the same lesson is emerging: strong squads and expensive recruitment do not automatically produce stability. City have the results but must improve their control, Tottenham need attacking direction and Atlético must manage the fallout from a disrupted transfer saga.
