Manchester City have completed the signing of Enzo Fernández from Chelsea in a joint-British-record £125 million deal. The 25-year-old Argentina international has signed a five-year contract at the Etihad Stadium, reuniting with Enzo Maresca and becoming one of the most expensive players in British football history.

The move represents a major investment in City’s midfield rebuild. Fernández originally joined Chelsea from Benfica for £107 million in January 2023, then a British-record fee, and now becomes a central figure in Maresca’s reshaped side. His arrival follows City’s summer additions of Elliot Anderson and Ayyoub Bouaddi, giving the champions a markedly refreshed group in the middle of the pitch.

Chelsea have received a substantial fee for Fernández but were unable to secure a direct replacement before the deadline. The club assessed several midfield options, including Monaco’s Lamine Camara and Arsenal’s Martín Zubimendi. No formal approach was made for Zubimendi, while Chelsea’s proposed £47 million move for Camara collapsed late on deadline day.

Chelsea, managed by Xabi Alonso, now face the challenge of adapting after the departure of one of their most influential midfielders. The sale provides considerable financial flexibility, but the club must determine whether its existing options and future recruitment can adequately compensate for Fernández’s exit.

For Manchester City, Fernández’s arrival is a clear statement of intent. His technical quality, international experience and familiarity with Maresca’s approach strengthen a midfield that has undergone extensive change. The long-term significance of the transfer will depend on how quickly he settles at City and whether the investment translates into success in the Premier League and European competition.
