Malick Fofana has chosen to join Sunderland after one of the most dramatic transfer battles of deadline day. The Belgium international winger had been caught between Sunderland and Crystal Palace, but his representatives informed both clubs that he wanted to complete the move to Wearside.
Sunderland originally agreed a deal with Lyon worth approximately €30 million plus €5 million in potential add-ons. The 21-year-old was expected to sign a five-year contract with the Black Cats after completing a medical connected to the proposed transfer.
Crystal Palace then launched a late attempt to hijack the move. The Eagles agreed a larger package with Lyon, reported to be worth approximately €39 million including bonuses, and manager Pierre Sage personally contacted Fofana. Sage previously worked with the winger at Lyon and attempted to convince him to choose Selhurst Park.
Palace’s intervention briefly appeared to have changed the outcome. Fofana travelled to England, but the player’s final destination became unclear as both clubs tried to complete the transfer. Palace were prepared to offer the same five-year contract as Sunderland, while the two clubs competed to secure his approval before the 11 p.m. Premier League deadline.
Sunderland responded by improving the commission package offered to Fofana’s representatives. That intervention helped swing the negotiations back in the Black Cats’ favour, with the player ultimately deciding that Sunderland remained his preferred destination.
The transfer follows Arsenal’s decision not to meet Lyon’s valuation. The Premier League champions had shown interest in Fofana as they assessed attacking reinforcements, but Sunderland moved ahead after the Gunners stepped away from the race.
Fofana arrives at Sunderland after an injury-disrupted previous season in which he made only 16 appearances following ankle surgery. He began the new campaign in stronger form, scoring twice in his first six matches for Lyon.
His move to Wearside gives him the chance to compete in the Europa League and work under manager Régis Le Bris. Sunderland also needed another wide attacker after Simon Adingra’s loan move to Ajax reduced their options on the flank.
The Belgian winger’s transfer still required the final administrative steps and formal registration before it could be regarded as fully completed. Nevertheless, after Palace’s late intervention and Sunderland’s counter-offensive, Fofana’s decision has ended one of the most extraordinary transfer sagas of the summer window.
