Chelsea’s attacking quality is becoming one of the main talking points of the new Premier League season after Xabi Alonso’s side defeated Brighton 4–3 at Stamford Bridge. The result gave Chelsea two wins from their opening two league matches and showcased the attacking influence of Cole Palmer, João Pedro and Morgan Rogers.
Chelsea moved 2–0 ahead inside the opening 14 minutes. Romeo Lavia scored first before Pedro Neto added the second, with the hosts’ quick passing and movement causing Brighton significant problems.
João Pedro then made it 3–0 in the 32nd minute against his former club. The goal followed a rapid move involving Jorrel Hato and Morgan Rogers, underlining the speed and directness Alonso wants from his attack.
Brighton responded before halftime through Malick Yalcouyé. Pedro Neto then turned Pascal Groß’s cross into his own net in the 63rd minute, reducing the deficit and creating a tense final half-hour.
Cole Palmer eventually settled Chelsea’s nerves with a superb individual goal. The England international carried the ball forward before curling a shot into the corner to restore the two-goal lead. Brighton scored again late on, but Chelsea held on for a 4–3 victory.
The result highlighted the attacking options available to Alonso. Palmer remains Chelsea’s main creative outlet, while Rogers provides power and direct running from wide areas. João Pedro has also made an impressive start as the central forward, scoring against both Fulham and Brighton.
Chelsea have invested heavily during the summer, including a British-record £117 million deal for Rogers from Aston Villa. They have also added experienced Premier League players such as Danny Welbeck and Jordan Henderson, although Henderson missed the Brighton match through injury.
Estêvão is another highly rated attacking prospect in the squad. The Brazilian teenager was among Chelsea’s substitutes against Brighton and is expected to receive more opportunities as he adapts to English football.
The attacking depth has raised questions about whether Chelsea now possess one of the Premier League’s most dangerous forward groups. Their combination of pace, creativity and physical power makes them difficult to defend, especially when Palmer is given freedom between the lines.
However, the victory also exposed Chelsea’s weaknesses. Alonso’s team conceded three goals after taking a commanding lead, while their defensive structure became increasingly vulnerable as Brighton increased the pressure. Chelsea have now scored seven goals and conceded five in their first two league matches.
Manchester United also produced a major attacking performance on Sunday, defeating Ipswich Town 5–2 at Old Trafford. Bruno Fernandes scored a hat-trick and led United to their first league victory of the season, while Bryan Mbeumo also found the net.
Across Europe, Barcelona are preparing to complete the signing of Gabriel Jesus from Arsenal. The Brazilian forward is expected to undergo a medical after the clubs agreed a deal worth approximately €10 million plus add-ons.
Real Madrid’s tactical situation remains another major storyline, while Manchester City continue to reshape their squad around Erling Haaland and Rodri. Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernández is also attempting to build on an impressive goalscoring season from midfield as uncertainty continues over his long-term future.
In MLS, Lionel Messi produced one of the weekend’s outstanding individual performances. He scored four goals and provided an assist as Inter Miami defeated CF Montréal 7–1, ending a five-match winless run and moving Messi to the top of the league’s scoring chart with 18 goals.
From Chelsea’s attacking surge to Fernandes’s hat-trick and Messi’s record-breaking display, the weekend delivered a series of dramatic performances. The early season has already provided strong evidence that Europe’s leading clubs are entering another campaign filled with major tactical and transfer storylines.
