Bruno Fernandes produced a superb captain’s performance as Manchester United came from behind to beat Ipswich Town 5–2 at Old Trafford. The victory gave Michael Carrick’s side their first Premier League points of the season after last weekend’s defeat to Hull City.
Ipswich made the better start and took the lead in the 29th minute through Leif Davis, whose excellent finish exposed gaps in United’s defensive structure. The visitors looked capable of causing another upset, but Fernandes soon changed the match.
The Portuguese midfielder equalized in the 40th minute after Matheus Cunha played him through following a mistake by Marcelino Núñez. Fernandes finished confidently to restore United’s momentum just before halftime.
United then took control after the break. Jacob Greaves turned a Harry Maguire effort into his own net in the 56th minute, before Fernandes converted a penalty five minutes later after Greaves brought down Cunha.
Fernandes completed his hat-trick in the 68th minute, calmly finishing from close range. He nearly added a fourth from distance, before turning provider for Bryan Mbeumo, who scored United’s fifth goal with a composed lob in the 82nd minute.
Ipswich added a late consolation through Chuba Akpom in stoppage time, but United had already secured a convincing victory. The performance represented a clear improvement in intensity and confidence compared with the disappointing loss at Hull.
Fernandes was the driving force behind the comeback. Usually United’s principal creator, he combined his passing range with ruthless finishing and repeatedly found space behind Ipswich’s midfield. His hat-trick was only his second in the Premier League, with the previous one coming in United’s opening home match against Leeds five years ago.
The captain’s form also renewed debate over his best position. Paul Scholes has argued that Fernandes should operate primarily as United’s No. 10, where he can influence matches without being restricted by deeper defensive responsibilities.
Carrick’s decision to give Fernandes freedom in advanced areas paid off against Ipswich. The midfielder’s movement created problems throughout the game, while his willingness to press and track back helped United recover after conceding early.
The result also offered encouragement to United’s other players. Harry Maguire provided a steady presence in defense, Kobbie Mainoo helped United progress the ball through midfield and Mbeumo added a goal after contributing to the team’s attacking momentum.
United now have three points from their opening two matches, while Ipswich remain on three points after their victory over Sunderland last weekend. The two sides have identical records of one win and one defeat, although United’s superior goal difference moves them above Ipswich.
For Carrick, the victory provides valuable breathing room and demonstrates that United can respond to setbacks. Fernandes’ display will attract most of the attention, but the broader improvement in attitude and intensity was equally important.
United must now build on the result. One emphatic victory cannot erase the problems exposed at Hull, but if Fernandes continues to operate with this level of freedom and confidence, the Red Devils have a player capable of transforming their season.
