Bolton Wanderers’ Sam Dalby went head-to-head with head coach Steven Schumacher in Sky Sports’ “Player versus Gaffer” penalty challenge, providing a light-hearted moment during the early stages of the club’s return to the Championship. The feature was published on 24 August, shortly after Bolton’s opening league fixtures.
Bolton began their Championship campaign with a 2–1 home victory over Preston North End on 15 August at the Toughsheet Community Stadium. They then travelled to Loftus Road on 22 August, where they drew 0–0 with Queens Park Rangers. The result left Schumacher’s side with four points from their first two league matches.
The QPR match was a competitive encounter in which Bolton demonstrated defensive organisation but lacked the attacking quality needed to claim all three points. Schumacher said afterward that his players would be fine if they continued to display the required passion and determination.
Bolton’s next scheduled Championship fixture is at home to Lincoln City on Saturday, 29 August. The match will give Schumacher’s newly promoted side an opportunity to build on its unbeaten start and continue adapting to the demands of the second tier.
Dalby remains one of the attacking options available to Schumacher, having played an important role in Bolton’s promotion campaign. The striker scored in the club’s 2026 League One play-off semi-final victory over Bradford City and was later praised by Schumacher for his contribution in the play-off final against Stockport County. Those matches are useful background to Dalby’s role, but they are not current fixtures and should not be presented as part of the present Championship schedule.
