Julián Álvarez’s future at Atlético Madrid has become one of the summer’s most contentious transfer stories after the Argentine forward was booed by supporters during Atlético’s 2–2 draw with Villarreal on 23 August.
Álvarez was named among the substitutes and received jeers when his name was announced, while warming up, and again after entering the match in the 66th minute. Some fans chanted for him to leave after he publicly acknowledged during the World Cup that he had discussed a potential move with Atlético in pursuit of his “dream.” He was widely reported to favour Barcelona.
The tension continued after the final whistle. Álvarez headed straight to the dressing room while teammates went to acknowledge the supporters. Diego Simeone later said that this had been a club decision, intended to keep the player away from the stands amid the hostile atmosphere. Simeone nevertheless stressed that Álvarez remains an important player and said he did not support insults or abuse directed at him.
Barcelona have been strongly linked with the Argentina international, but Atlético’s position has been firm: they do not want to sell him to a direct La Liga rival. Reports say Barcelona submitted an offer of around €100 million earlier in the summer, which Atlético rejected. Atlético chief executive Miguel Ángel Gil Marín has reportedly said the club would not sell Álvarez to Barcelona even for €200 million.
Arsenal remain a potential alternative destination, although a move would be exceptionally expensive. Reporting has suggested Atlético would only consider a sale to Arsenal at around €150 million, a price considered unlikely to be met. Álvarez is also reported to prefer a move to Barcelona rather than a return to the Premier League.
The dispute comes after Argentina’s World Cup campaign, not during it. Argentina defeated Switzerland after extra time in the quarter-finals before overcoming England 2–1 in the semi-finals to reach the final against Spain. Enzo Fernández received a second yellow card and was sent off in that final, following a challenge on Spain defender Pau Cubarsí.
