India’s U15 men’s team has concluded their qualifying campaign in Group K of the FIFA U15 World Cup & Festival with a decisive 1-6 defeat to Senegal in their final match at the Hovsan Competition Complex in Baku. The result, compounded by Cameroon’s 2-0 victory over Bahrain, sealed India’s third-place finish with 10 points from five games—enough to place them in Tier C, where they will vie for positions 65th to 96th in the tournament’s second phase.
The defeat to Senegal, who finished atop Group K with 12 points, exposed the vulnerabilities that had plagued India’s campaign. Ronandev Aheibam’s lone goal in the 61st minute was overshadowed by Abdoulaye Diallo’s four strikes (9’, 11’, 18’, 31’) and Senegal’s clinical dominance. The margin of defeat underscored the gap between the West African powerhouse and the Blue Colts, who had earlier secured two hard-fought wins over Laos and Cameroon. Their 1-0 victory against Cameroon, secured on penalties after a 1-1 draw, had been their most significant triumph, but the Senegal match revealed the depth of their challenges in transitioning from qualification to the knockout stages.
India’s journey through Group K had been a rollercoaster of highs and lows. They began with a 1-0 win over Laos, followed by a 1-1 draw with Bahrain before a 1-1 stalemate against Grenada left them with a fragile 3-point lead. The defeat to Senegal, however, erased any lingering hopes of advancing to Tier B, where Senegal and Cameroon would compete. Bahrain and Laos, with four points each, were relegated to Tiers D and E, while Grenada, who lost 7-1 to Senegal, finished last in Tier F.
With the group stage now complete, India’s focus shifts to Tier C, where they will face tougher competition in the second phase. Their next match against Grenada on Sunday at 17:15 IST will be their final opportunity to salvage some pride before concluding the qualification stage with a 14:15 IST fixture against Bahrain. The results of these matches will determine their exact placement in Tier C, but one thing is certain: the Blue Colts’ journey at this FIFA U15 World Cup & Festival has already taken a significant turn for the worse.
