Liverpool Earn First Anfield League Victory Under Iraola with Convincing 2-0 Win Over Brighton

Liverpool secured a much-needed 2–0 victory over Brighton at Anfield, delivering manager Andoni Iraola his first Premier League win on home soil. Two goals in a four-minute first-half spell put the Reds in control, ending their five-match home winless run in the league and providing encouragement after an uneven start to the campaign.

The breakthrough arrived in the 17th minute when Florian Wirtz’s shot deflected off Pascal Groß and past Bart Verbruggen for an own goal. Four minutes later, Bradley Barcola capitalised on a misplaced pass, advanced down the right and supplied Alexander Isak, whose first-time finish doubled Liverpool’s advantage. The quick goals rewarded an energetic opening in which the hosts pressed aggressively and attacked with purpose.

Cody Gakpo also contributed to Liverpool’s attacking threat, forcing a save from Verbruggen as the Reds sought to extend their lead. Alongside Barcola, Wirtz and Isak, he helped stretch Brighton’s defence, although Liverpool passed up opportunities to make the scoreline more emphatic. Their early precision ultimately proved sufficient.

Defensively, Ronald Araújo emerged as a standout performer. Playing at right-back, the on-loan Barcelona defender contributed to the move for the opening goal and produced an improvised defensive header while on the ground to deny Maxim De Cuyper an opportunity shortly after Liverpool went 2–0 ahead. His physical commitment and interventions helped the hosts maintain their clean sheet.

Brighton arrived in strong form, but Liverpool prevented them from establishing sustained attacking momentum after the interval. The visitors’ eight-match unbeaten run ended as the Reds managed their advantage, combining defensive discipline with occasional opportunities on the counterattack.

Beyond the result, the victory offered Iraola a platform on which to build. Liverpool recorded their fourth consecutive win in all competitions, while ending their wait for a home league victory stretching back to April. The next task is to carry that balance of attacking intensity and defensive concentration into the fixtures ahead.
