Bayern Munich Head Coach Vincent Kompany Hospitalized After Collapsing at Training

Bayern Munich head coach Vincent Kompany has been admitted to hospital after collapsing at the club’s Sabener Strasse headquarters on Friday. The 40-year-old manager required emergency treatment from a medical team on site before being taken to hospital by ambulance. Bayern confirmed that the former Manchester City and Belgium defender is currently in stable condition, undergoing thorough examinations, and will remain under medical care until further notice.

The incident occurred while Kompany was observing a training session for Bayern’s reserve team, having earlier completed a pre-match press conference ahead of the club’s upcoming Bundesliga fixture against Freiburg. Kompany had been nursing a viral infection over the past week that was affecting his legs. The illness previously forced him to miss training and a scheduled pre-match news conference on Tuesday prior to Bayern’s Champions League fixture against Arsenal at the Allianz Arena.

Despite his illness, Kompany took his place on the touchline for Wednesday’s Champions League draw against Arsenal. Addressing his physical state after that match, he admitted that he had pushed himself too far. He explained that he caught a pretty nasty virus and didn’t listen to his body until it finally told him that enough was enough. The physical strain had also been visible during Bayern’s 6-1 victory over Leipzig in the Bundesliga the previous Saturday, where he appeared unusually subdued and remained seated on the bench throughout the contest.

With the Bundesliga leaders preparing for their match against Freiburg, Bayern confirmed that Kompany’s assistant coaching staff will immediately manage all training sessions and match operations until further notice. FC Bayern board member for sport Max Eberl emphasized that the manager’s well-being remains the organization’s sole focus during this period.

Eberl stated that Kompany’s health is the club’s top priority and promised that everyone at Bayern will do whatever it takes to support his speedy recovery. Reaffirming full faith in the remaining staff, Eberl added that Kompany will be granted all the time and medical support he needs while his trusted coaching team manages duties. Support has also poured in from his former club, Manchester City, who sent well-wishes to their former captain and legend following his appointment at Bayern in May 2024.
