The clock is ticking for Inter Miami’s 2025 MLS Cup defense, and the outcome of tonight’s Matchday 31 fixture against the New York Red Bulls could be decided by one man: Lionel Messi. After a whirlwind week that began with the Princess of Asturias Sports Award in Oviedo, the Argentine maestro has returned to the United States, where his presence—or absence—will be critical as Miami seeks to close the gap on Eastern Conference leaders Nashville SC. Coach Kily Gonzalez has confirmed Messi will be available for the Red Bull Arena showdown, a statement that carries weight given the club’s recent struggles without him.
Messi’s return to Miami follows a demanding schedule that included an awards ceremony in Spain and an impending invitation to the Ballon d’Or ceremony in London—two events that have raised questions about his availability. While the official starting lineup will provide the final confirmation, Gonzalez’s assurance suggests Miami’s star will not be sidelined for this pivotal match. The stakes are high: three points tonight would significantly narrow the gap to Nashville, while a victory for New York could derail Miami’s playoff ambitions. With four Inter Miami players already ruled out due to injuries or suspensions, Messi’s role in the attack will be even more pronounced.
Beyond the immediate tactical implications, Messi’s participation in this game could signal his long-term commitment to Inter Miami’s title defense. His consistency this season has been nothing short of extraordinary—14 goals and seven assists in his last 13 appearances, all played in full—proving he remains the club’s most reliable creative force. Yet his next move is far from settled. Reports indicate he has not yet decided whether to attend the Ballon d’Or ceremony in London, a decision that could be influenced by his performance against the Red Bulls. The pressure is palpable: a strong showing tonight could reinforce his place in Miami’s plans, while a less convincing display might open the door to a return to Europe.
The coming days will be decisive. After tonight’s match, Messi faces another high-profile commitment: a Monday evening appearance at the Ballon d’Or ceremony, where he is among the favorites to reclaim the award. Just three days later, Inter Miami hosts FC Cincinnati, a fixture that could further clarify his availability for the remainder of the season. With the playoffs looming, every decision Messi makes now carries weight—not just for his own legacy, but for the future of Inter Miami’s title hopes. The Red Bulls know this. The league knows this. And as the ball drops tonight at Red Bull Arena, the world will be watching to see if the greatest of them all is ready to deliver once more.
