Singapore’s football calendar has been disrupted by the worsening haze crisis, after the Football Association of Singapore (FAS) postponed the FA Cup final and third-place play-off scheduled for Saturday, October 17. Both matches were due to be played at Jurong East Stadium, but the Pollutant Standards Index (PSI) in the western region had risen above 200, exceeding the amateur-match threshold under the FAS-Singapore Premier League (SPL) Haze Management Protocol 2026.
The final was set to feature Police Sports Association, runners-up in the 2025 FA Cup, against Gymkhana Gaulois. South Avenue were due to face Bishan Barx in the third-place play-off.
Under the protocol, amateur fixtures can proceed only if the 24-hour PSI forecast is 200 or below and the one-hour PM2.5 reading falls within the “normal” or “elevated” bands. By contrast, professional competitions such as the SPL may continue with one-hour PM2.5 readings of up to 200, but must be suspended or postponed if that level is exceeded.
The decision followed Singapore’s highest 24-hour PSI reading of the year: 229, recorded in the central region at 3pm on October 16. The National Environment Agency forecast that PSI levels on October 17 could range from 150 to 230, spanning “unhealthy” to “very unhealthy” conditions.
The postponement forms part of a wider disruption to outdoor sport and community events across Singapore as air quality deteriorated. The FAS said both football fixtures would be rescheduled, with further arrangements to be announced once conditions and logistics allow.
For now, the postponement prioritises player and spectator health over competition. It also highlights the recurring vulnerability of Singapore’s sporting calendar to regional haze, particularly for community-based and amateur tournaments such as the FA Cup.
