Samuel Umtiti’s memories of Barcelona’s MSN era are filled with admiration, but his praise is rooted in what he saw every day in training and matches. Speaking to France Inter, the former Barcelona defender described Lionel Messi, Neymar, and Luis Suárez as “out of this world,” while explaining that their greatness made life easier for the players around them rather than more difficult.
Umtiti rejected the idea that sharing a dressing room with elite players creates pressure or complication. “People often say it’s difficult to play with the best,” he said. “On the contrary, they make your job easier. It was easy to play with them.”
For the French defender, what separated MSN was not simply their individual quality but their football intelligence. “I think you’re better when you play with Messi, Neymar and Suárez, because they’re so good,” Umtiti explained. “I always talk about footballing intelligence, positioning and the way they interpret what’s happening on the pitch.”
That understanding, he said, meant the trio always seemed to know where to be before an attack developed. “When you need to find a pass, they know exactly where to position themselves and when,” Umtiti recalled. Their movement created passing options and gave teammates confidence in possession.
Umtiti also highlighted Andrés Iniesta as another defining figure of that Barcelona side. “I also played alongside Iniesta in midfield and, for me, those were incredible moments, because that’s what football really is to me: technique, tactical intelligence, positioning and effortless control,” he said.
In Umtiti’s view, Barcelona possessed all of those qualities at once. “Barcelona had all of that, and when you had the front three in their element, it was incredible,” he said. “They were out of this world, but they got on really well both off the pitch and on it.”
The former centre-back also pointed to the trio’s willingness to share success. “If two of them had scored, you’d see that for the third goal they’d do everything possible to set up the third scorer,” Umtiti said, underlining the collective mindset behind their individual brilliance.
For Umtiti, the MSN era remains a benchmark for what football can be when talent, intelligence, and chemistry align. It was not merely a collection of great players, but a front three whose understanding of one another made Barcelona’s attacks feel almost inevitable.
