Arsenal’s January Blitz: Arteta’s Contract Extension Sets Stage for Bold Midfield & Forward Push

Mikel Arteta’s new contract until the summer of 2030 gives Arsenal managerial continuity as they pursue new agreements for Declan Rice, Martin Ødegaard and Jurriën Timber. Alongside those negotiations, the club have been linked with Club Tijuana attacking midfielder Gilberto Mora and RB Leipzig winger Antonio Nusa. The reports suggest planning for future recruitment, but do not establish an unprecedented January spending campaign or completed transfer agreements.

Retaining the core comes first
Arsenal are reportedly aiming to finalise the three player extensions during the November international break, or at least before the January window opens. Rice, Ødegaard and Timber currently have contracts running until 2028, so the discussions concern longer-term security rather than imminent departures. Reports attributed to TEAMtalk describe negotiations as progressing positively, but the new deals have not yet been announced.

Arteta’s extension provides a foundation for that continuity. After helping Arsenal win last season’s Premier League title, the manager has committed to another four years. That does not mean the current championship is already secured: Arsenal are defending their crown in the 2026–27 campaign, with the season still in its early stages.

Gilberto Mora is the reported midfield target
The player linked with both Arsenal and Liverpool is Gilberto Mora, not an unidentified established midfielder. The Mexican attacking prospect is under contract with Club Tijuana until 2029 and turns 18 this week. According to Mexican reporting cited by the Mirror, Arsenal have approached his club over a possible transfer, with an opening bid also reported.

The same account puts Mora’s release clause at £21.2 million. Those details remain attributed transfer reporting, rather than confirmation from Arsenal or Tijuana. They also do not demonstrate that Arsenal have outbid Liverpool or that either club has agreed a fee.

Antonio Nusa interest faces a valuation gap
Arsenal’s other reported target is Antonio Nusa, the 21-year-old Norway winger at Leipzig—not a centre-forward identified as a replacement for Alexandre Lacazette. Reports suggest Arsenal are preparing an opening offer around £34 million, while Leipzig’s valuation has been quoted at approximately £51–55 million in some accounts and £60 million in others. The figures describe differing reports, not an agreed transfer price.

There is also a question of timing. One report says Leipzig do not intend to sell Nusa in January, which could make a summer move more plausible even if Arsenal formalise their interest. Aston Villa and Newcastle have also been linked, adding potential competition without establishing a live bidding contest.

The available evidence therefore points to two parallel priorities: securing important existing players and exploring additions with long-term potential. Arteta’s extension supports both, but the scale of January recruitment remains uncertain. Mora and Nusa are reported targets; neither should yet be presented as the centrepiece of a confirmed transfer offensive.
